Onar is a former village in the district Arapgir the Turkish province of Malatya . The county seat is about 15 km away and the provincial capital Malatya is 110 km away. Onar has been part of Arapgir since the last territorial reform .

location

The clustered village is surrounded by fields and pastures at the entrance of a gorge that leads over 5 km away and almost 300 meters in altitude to the bank of the Keban reservoir . Before the reservoir was built in 1975, the gorge continued to the Arapgir Çayı , a tributary of the Euphrates , on which the late Roman Karamagara Bridge was located.

Sights and history

Roman epoch

Eighteen rock graves from the Roman era can be considered the oldest surviving evidence of history . The graves are carved into the limestone on the outskirts, at the entrance to a ravine . Some are decorated with reliefs. One has a wall painting showing running horses. Most of the graves are in a good state of preservation. They have since been declared a first-rate archaeological site.

Legendary town foundation by Sheikh Hassan Oner

Sheikh Hassan Oner (1156? -1276?) Belonged to the Oghuz tribe of the Bayat , who came to Anatolia with the Seljuks in the 11th century . Through his training in the madrasa he stood in the tradition of the important Sufist and poet Ahmed Yesevi (1103–1166). Like other dervishes , he was in the service of the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat and accompanied him on his conquests in the Euphrates region. According to legend, Sheikh Hassan Oner founded the village of Onar on April 22nd, 1224 and died here at the old age of 120.

The local legend tells that the dervish always wandered with his staff, which he put on the ground next to him at night. He had said to himself “only when the staff takes root one night will I settle down in that place.” So it happened that night in 1224 in Onar, and Sheikh Hassan stayed with his staff, which was rooted in the earth, founded the village and built a cemevi , a prayer room for the Alevi believers.

In the village square there is not only the Sheikh Hassan Oners shrine , but also a very old tree. It is said to be the former stick that took root.

Alevi prayer room

One of the oldest Alevi prayer rooms in Turkey is located in Onar. It is said to come from the year 1224. The room is in regular use by the local believers.

Population development

Sign at the entrance to the village

As in many rural areas of Turkey, the number of inhabitants in Onar also fell sharply until the turn of the millennium. Reasons for this are rural exodus and emigration for economic interests.
