description

Achena with pappus from Onopordum nervosum

Vegetative characteristics

Onopordum species are biennial , herbaceous plants ; they are rarely perennial. A rosette is formed in the first year. In the second year, they grow to sometimes impressive heights of 0.5 to 4 meters and plant diameters of 1.5 meters. They are covered with loose and cobweb-like hair.

The mostly sessile leaves are serrated or pinnate, wavy and thorny. Their broad, sloping edges form thorny wings on the stem.

Generative characteristics

The entire inflorescence is spreading and branched. The basket-shaped part inflorescences are large, spherical and multi-row with stiff thorny Hüllblättchen surrounded. There are only purple (rarely white or pink) tubular flowers .

The achenes are flattened and four to five-sided. The pappus consists of many rows of bristles that have grown together at their base.

The genus Onopordum was established by Carl von Linné . The botanical generic name Onopordum is made up of the Greek words : ónos for donkey and porde for flatulence.

The genus Onopordum belongs to the subtribe Carduinae from the tribe Cardueae in the subfamily Carduoideae within the family Asteraceae .

Species and their distribution

Most types of onopordum have their areas in the Mediterranean countries; they occur from Central Europe to Central Asia and North Africa. In some countries, individual species have been introduced as ornamental plants and are rapidly spreading as invasive plants .

There are about 40 (25 to 60) species in the genus of the donkey thistle ( Onopordum ) (selection):
