Oray is a German feature film directed by Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay . It celebrated its world premiere on February 11, 2019 at the 69th Berlinale in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section , where it was awarded the prize for the best debut film.

action

Oray, a young Muslim of Turkish descent, lives with his wife Burcu in Hagen . In an argument he pronounces the Islamic formula for divorce Talāq . The imam of his home community explains the consequences to him: Oray has to separate from Burcu for three months.

He uses the compulsory break to start over and moves to Cologne . Here he finds a job at a flea market and a new congregation run by the young Imam Bilal. He soon begins to preach and is popular with everyone, which makes Bilal envious. He missionises the boy Ebu Bekir for Islam. When Burcu visits Oray unexpectedly, they realize that the break was good for them. They still love each other. So he asks Bilal for advice. But this advocates a stricter interpretation of Islamic law, namely that the pronouncing of Talāq does not mean pause, but final divorce.

Oray suppresses Bilal's fatwa and is torn between his belief in love and his love of faith. The tension between Bilal and Oray ends in a heated argument, whereupon he leaves the community. When Burcu also returned to Hagen, he was lonely. Oray has a decision to make.

criticism

This section consists only of a cunning collection of quotes from movie reviews. Instead, a summary of the reception of the film should be provided as continuous text, which can also include striking quotations, see also the explanations in the film format .

"The film concentrates entirely on this character, and it is not least thanks to Zejhun Demirov's art of playing that we can get involved in a completely different picture of the Islamic community. He invites us to experience the normal life of a Muslim living in Germany, to experience the importance of religion in one's everyday life. "

- Jury statement for the FIRST STEPS Award

"a particularly cryptic and serious contribution ..."

- Mirror online

"Thanks to his sensitive camera and the pointed dialogues, which never seem wooden, but always lifelike through and through, Oray has become a remarkable debut, which enables new perspectives and insights into the worlds of life that are otherwise only clichéd on the screen or on television sees. A stroke of luck as I said. "

- Cinema time

"A well worth seeing, dense, thoroughly believable film that, despite all the drama, casts an almost documentary look at the world of Muslim young men in Germany, far from any cliché."

- German film and media rating

"Employing an excellent mix of young talent and non-professionals, and approaching the characters and their relationships in a naturalistic manner, Büyükatalay weaves the story with a precision rarely seen in first-time filmmakers ..."
