features

butterfly

There is a strong sexual dimorphism between the sexes . The male moths have normally developed wings and reach a wingspan of 17 to 25 millimeters. The upper side of the forewing has a light yellow basic color, on which three strong black-brown cross bars stand out, of which the two inner ones are connected by a cross bar on the inner edge . The central point is large, black-brown and kidney-shaped. The upper side of the hind wing is bright yellow and shows a broad, dark brown outer edge. A dark triangular spot extends from the front edge into the disk region . The antennae are double ciliate, the thorax furry hairy.

The flightless females have completely receded wings and a plump, short-haired, gray-yellow to brown-yellow body that does not correspond to that of a typical butterfly. Their body length is 13 to 18, the body width 8 to 10 millimeters. They have short, sawtooth-like antennae.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The egg is round and white. The caterpillars are conspicuously colored or hairy and vary in basic color. The back brushes and hair brushes are whitish, yellowish or reddish. The female caterpillar is much larger than the male. Accordingly, the black-brown female doll is also significantly larger than the male.

Similar species, subspecies and occurrences

With regard to the occurrence of the very similar moths of Orgyia josephina and Orgyia splendida, there are some false reports and ambiguities in older literature. Orgyia josephina and Orgyia dubia cannot be separated due to their habitus, genital morphology and phenology and are therefore difficult to determine. Recent studies show that only Orgyia dubia occurs in Cyprus . No constant genital differences were found between the Orgyia dubia described from Russia , the Orgyia splendida described from Andalusia in Spain and the Orgyia josephina described from Algeria , which is why in this case only Orgyia dubia with several isolated subspecies : ssp. dubia in Russia, ssp. splendida on the Iberian Peninsula (central and southern parts) and northwestern Africa, ssp. arcerii in Sicily , ssp. algirica in North Africa (from Algeria to Israel ), ssp. transcaspica in Turkmenistan and ssp. turcica in Asia Minor (including Cyprus). In order to clarify open points within the species complex dubia - josephina - splendida , further genetic investigations are necessary , also using DNA barcoding analyzes.

Overall distribution and habitat

Orgyia dubia occurs from the Iberian Peninsula through all of North Africa to Egypt , Sicily, Palestine , Cyprus, Syria , Iran , Asia Minor, Armenia , southern Russia and as far as Central Asia. The species inhabits many very different biotopes and has been detected at altitudes of 3300 meters.

Way of life

Depending on the area where they are found, the moths form one or more generations per year, which can be found between April and October. The males are diurnal and fly quickly in the sunshine in search of the females. These remain on or in the web that surrounds the doll shell and are true to location. After mating, they lay the eggs in mirrors on the web. Food plants of the caterpillars are the leaves of oak ( Quercus ) and various low-growing plants, and include: Retama , ephedra ( Ephedra ), Polygonum ( Polygonum ), sorrel ( Rumex ), clover ( Trifolium ), Log ( Atriplex ), goose feet ( Chenopodium ), sun rose ( Helianthemum ), heather family (Ericaceae), gorse ( Genista ) and many others.
