Oscar Caminneci (born April 17, 1885 in Palermo / Sicily; † March 9, 1945 in Mauthausen concentration camp ) was an Italian- German equestrian , writer and horse breeder .

Caminneci was the son of an Italian nobleman Andrea Caminneci sen. from Palermo and his wife Arnoldine Caminneci geb. Danzier , daughter of the King District Administrator Oskar Danzier . After the death of his grandfather Pier Lorenzo Caminneci in 1895, the family moved to Germany. They lived in Mühlheim / Rhein , Bonn and at Windeck Castle in today's Rhein-Sieg district .

Together with his two brothers Andrea and Waldemar, Caminneci was enthusiastic about equestrian sports and hunting. As an Italian citizen, he completed his military service with a cavalry regiment in Rome. His training at the famous military riding schools Tor di Quinto and Pinerolo formed the basis for his rise to a show jumping rider with a European reputation. When Oscar Caminneci appeared at German tournaments for the first time in 1910, he was the first show jumper in Germany who persistently practiced the lightweight, forward- leaning jumping seat established by Federico Caprilli in Pinerolo against considerable resistance, especially from the highest military authorities, which are decisive for riding training.

He was editor of the equestrian magazine St. Georg .

During the First World War he was a reserve officer in the 1st Guards Dragoon Regiment. During the Second World War, Caminneci participated as a volunteer in the Africa Corps on the staff of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel as a liaison officer to the Italian army.

In 1914 he married the Siemens granddaughter Mathilde Eleonore Eveline. For the wedding, father-in-law Wilhelm von Siemens gave the young couple the Zetthun estate in the Köslin district in Western Pomerania . In addition to agriculture and forestry (around 5,700 hectares), Caminneci ran a well-respected thoroughbred breed there. He was a member of the Club of Berlin (CVB).

Due to conflicts with the chief hunter Ulrich Scherping , Caminneci was subjected to a court of honor in 1944 . His arrest on the night of July 20-21, 1944 led to the assumption that it was related to the assassination attempt of July 20, 1944 . Caminneci had contacts with the conspirators, but was not politically active. The real reason for his assignment to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp was probably the hatred of Scherping, who disagreed with the favorable outcome of the court of honor proceedings for Caminneci and used the opportunity for personal settlement. As the Russian front approached, Caminneci came to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in mid-February 1945 after days of transport and marches under catastrophic living conditions . There he was murdered on March 9, 1945. Former Chancellor Franz von Papen (1879–1969) wrote in his book Der Truth ein Gasse : " I wrestled with Himmler over the fate of three people until February 1945: my former State Secretary Erwin Planck , the son-in-law of my old, unforgettable friend Wedemeier, Pastor Bonhoeffer , and Mr. Caminneci. I couldn't save any of them ... "

family

The marriage with Mathilde, called Tilda, had two children: Eleonore, called Nora, married. von Eichel (1915–1957) and Harras Ursus (1918–1944). Mathilde Caminneci, her daughter Nora and her granddaughter Beatrix, called Bibi, fled to Dattenfeld towards the end of the war to the family of Oscar's brother Waldemar Caminneci. Mathilde died there unexpectedly on October 9, 1945. The animal sculptor Vera Lwowski , b. Caminneci, is the niece of Oscar Caminneci, daughter of his brother Waldemar.
