Oskar von Strachwitz

Oskar Adam Julius Ernst Valentin Graf von Strachwitz (born August 11, 1822 in Pawlau , † February 4, 1893 in Polish-Neukirch ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and most recently the commander of the 8th Cavalry Brigade.

Life

origin

His parents were the country's oldest and hereditary lord on Polish Krawarn and Pawlau, Karl von Strachwitz (1796-1866) and his first wife Marie Friederike, nee Stockmans (1799-1837).

Career

He received his education at the Knight Academy in Liegnitz and the division school in Neisse . After graduating, he joined the 6th Hussar Regiment on July 25, 1840 as a hussar . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on January 9, 1841 and to Seconde Lieutenant on December 13, 1842. From October 15, 1855 to September 1, 1857 he was posted to the veterinary school . During this time he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on April 15, 1856 and on July 19, 1857 appointed squadron leader in the 6th Landwehr Hussar Regiment. There he was promoted to Rittmeister on May 31, 1859. On June 8, 1861, he returned to the 6th Hussar Regiment as squadron chief. During the German War of 1866 he fought in the Battle of Königgrätz . After the war he was promoted to major on October 30, 1866 and transferred to the 14th Hussar Regiment as a regular staff officer. From February 1, 1868 to May 1, 1868 he was posted to the military riding institute.

During the Franco-German War he fought near Weißenburg , Wörth and Sedan as well as the sieges of Pfalzburg and Paris . For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd class on August 25, 1870 . From December 28, 1870 to February 10, 1871 he was assigned to the 3rd Army ammunition park as a department commander.

After the war, on July 15, 1871, he was charged with the command of the 21st Dragoon Regiment, and was placed à la suite of the same. Promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 18, 1871, he was commander of the regiment on November 4, 1871. On September 2, 1875 he was promoted to colonel and on September 22, 1877 was awarded the Order of the Crown, Second Class. On April 29, 1879, he was given the command of the 8th Cavalry Brigade and was assigned à la suite of the 21st Dragoon Regiment; on May 13, 1879 he was confirmed as commander. There he was promoted to major general on February 3, 1880, and on January 22, 1882, the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords on the ring. On May 15, 1883, he was given the character of Lieutenant General and was put up for disposal with a pension .

family

Strachwitz married Hedwig Countess von Matuschka (1825–1895) on October 25, 1852 in Arnsdorf . The couple had several children:

  • Georg Friedrich Karl Ernst Maria (* January 27, 1855), Herr auf Neudeck ⚭ 1884 Anna von Saurma-Jeltsch (* February 21, 1862)
  • Maria Anna Franziska (* August 21, 1858; † 1944) ⚭ Count Viktor von Helmstatt (1851–1935), Majorate Lord of Neckarbischofsheim
