Osmosis is a French science fiction - television series by Audrey Fouché with Hugo Becker and Agathe Bonitzer . The eight-part season appeared on Netflix on March 29, 2019 . It is about a technological possibility to determine the true love for everyone.

In Paris in the near future, Esther Vanhove developed Osmosis : a brain implant to be taken as a pill, which identifies and indicates the perfect partner, the soul twin for a lifelong, happy love. If the soul twin can also insert an implant, the two partners can connect spiritually in a virtual room and " experience the perfect osmosis ". The first tester was her brother Paul, who was supposed to be cured of an illness, but also found his way to his wife Josephine in this way, but who suddenly decides to have her implant removed again. Paul is now the CEO of the company of the same name behind the Osmosis product , which is about to be launched. Adversity and opponents can be found in jumping investors, the competitor Perfect Match ; an activist group called humanists; Hackers attacking Artificial Intelligence in osmosis and the police.
During the beta test , the implant is administered to twelve subjects, including Niels Larsen, a minor, who is addicted to masturbation . | Because Osmosis investors are bailing out, Paul Esther gives a month to complete the test phase and runs a live advertisement after which they are attacked by hackers. In the beta test, twelve subjects took the implant, including Niels Larsen, who moved up at short notice. Martin shows Esther that the T3 networks of the test subjects Ana, Lucas and Niels together result in a match with that of their mother. After a week, the test subjects will be shown their soul twin. | A flashback shows how Esther used the implant to get Paul out of a coma and saw Josephine doing it. The police don't want to help him find her. When activists smear the osmosis center, Paul physically assaults you because he thinks she is Josephine's kidnapper. The test subjects Niels and Ana make first contact with their soul twins, a painting teacher and a sports trainer, and they immediately feel attraction. Ana, however, infiltrates osmosis for the humanists. Lucas, who is in a relationship, hesitates at first to make contact, because his soul twin is his ex-partner, but then they have sex. Esther instructs the AI Martin to upload her memories to the implants of Ana, Niels and Lucas, with which she wants to activate her mother's neural network. | Esther thinks the kidnappers are trying to hack Josephine's implant. With the test subjects who deepen the contact with their soul twins, Esther's memories slowly set in and they perceive a swimming pool. | Esther tries to contact Josephine through an emergency channel in Paul's implant by increasing his stress level by causing shortness of breath. Paul receives a video from Josephine and Eloan offers to help him with the case. After Lucas takes Leopold to an event as a partner, he tells Antoine that he is participating in Osmosis. Ana sleeps with Simon. With Niels the implant should be removed, but at the last second he decides against it and runs away. Esther tells Paul how she wants to heal her mother. | Josephine returns and reports that she had the implant removed so that she could feel her love for Paul even without technology. After Ana and Simon had expressed their love for each other, he heard a message on her answering machine from the humanist Romy that Ana would only pretend her love. Niels instructs himself in an emotion control center. When the test subjects report further perceptions of a swimming pool, Billie realizes what Esther did because of her mother. | Esther tries to reactivate her mother's memory by taking her to her old house. When she had Martin show her a key memory of her mother there, it happened differently than she knew herself: Instead of being rescued by her brother in a bathing accident, Paul's sister died in the pool. So Esther finds out that she was adopted a year later. Tormented by the memory, Louise wants Paul to kill her, which Esther does by decoupling Martin's medical support from her mother. | In an identity crisis, Esther feels created and shaped like Martin, and gives herself more and more to virtual sex with the avatar Tom. With osmosis, on the other hand, she wants to get out. Paul discovers that Gabriel and Swann helped Josephine remove the implant. After Martin had a short dropout, the police appeared to use Osmosis' GPS data to locate Niels and Claire, who were hiding in a forest. | Because Martin switched off, the testers fell into a coma. The solution to osmosis is to have Esther ingest an implant. In virtual space she meets Martin in the form of the avatar Tom. He lets the testers wake up in exchange for Esther staying with him, who is now in the hospital and spends romantic time with Martin. Niels and Claire are found and return home. Simon and Antoine make up with Ana and Lucas; and Paul gets involved again with Josephine, who is pregnant. The launch presentation takes place where Paul gives a speech to the audience and the testers report. Ana decides against using the stick when she stands in front of Martin, but is overwhelmed by the humanist Romy, who transmits the virus to Martin. This falls over in the virtual space and has to release Esther so that she can help him. Because the virus works in such a way that if Martin is rescued, the testers will die instead, he will shut down for good. Production and publication
On May 11, 2017, Netflix ordered Osmosis as its second in-house production from France to Marseille . It was developed by Audrey Fouché and is based on the idea of a TV series of the same name by Telfrance and Arte from 2015. Filming began in June 2018 and took place entirely in Paris . Osmosis was produced with a budget of 1 million euros per episode.
A trailer for Osmosis was released on February 28, 2019. The first two episodes premiered at the Series Mania Festival on March 24 in Lille . The entire season was released on Netflix on March 29th as the third French production, as the Plan cœur , which was only announced in December 2017, was already released in December 2018. On April 1, 2019, it was announced that Audrey Fouché had left the post of show runner.
In January 2020, the series was discontinued after a season.
reception
On Rotten Tomatoes , the season received a critic rating of 100% with 5 reviews. Osmosis is compared in the reception with Black Mirror and especially its episode Hang the DJ .
Gian Volpicelli writes for Wired : “If Osmosis were a Black Mirror episode, it would almost certainly develop into a predictable techno-dystopian disaster, but the writers of the series avoided this: we are warned against the pitfalls of getting too excited leaving technology, but eventually it emerges, at least in part, as a force for good. This optimistic approach, which seems increasingly rare, is refreshing and leads to a more careful consideration of the subject of love in the age of technology. " Osmosis takes a radically moderate tone, because technology would work and it is possible to find true love , but it still means a margin of error and work.
In The Verge says that she was like a Black Mirror episode, the technology does not hate. Noah Berlatsky writes that Osmosis is “less about the dangers of new technologies and more about familiar, well-known nightmares: ambition, insecurity, grief and love. Osmosis does not focus on moral panic headlines, but on stories. ”These would show that people do not fit neatly into an algorithm and allow themselves to be determined by a single simple narrative, even if it is fed directly into their brain. “ Osmosis technology does not create dystopia or utopia by itself . It's just a tool, and different people project different dreams and fears into it, for better or for worse. ”Regarding this article, the evening paper says that the comparison to Black Mirror is obvious, but something crucial is missing: the Hit in the pit of the stomach. "In none of the eight episodes is the brutal realization that we tech disciples may be praying to the wrong god - and unfortunately not after the finale of the first season either." Because the technology is not the plot itself, the series keeps viewers not a black mirror, but just an ordinary mirror to fill the pause.
Marietta Steinhart presents in Zeit Online Osmosis as one of the best series in April 2019 and writes: “The great cast Osmosis unfolds in eight episodes additional nuances and a depth that go beyond. The series is also much more grounded and brooding. The creator Audrey Fouché, who also wrote several episodes of the affectionate zombie series Les Revenants , invites us to apply this plausible fantasy of the future to our own lives. "
