The East Asian Games 2009 ( V. East Asian Games ) were played from December 5 to December 13, 2009 in Hong Kong . It was the fifth competitions of this kind and the largest to date in the history of the East Asian Games . The 90-minute opening ceremony saw a large firework display over Victoria Harbor . The politician Liu Yandong declared the nine-day games open. The budget was 240 million Hong Kong dollars .

Compared to the 2005 games, badminton , billiards , judo , cycling , 7-a-side rugby , squash , table tennis , volleyball and windsurfing were added, whereas dragon boating , gymnastics , karate and soft tennis were no longer part of the games.

As in all previous East Asian Games, China took first place in the medal table, followed by Japan and South Korea.
