East Indonesia ( Indonesian Negara Indonesia Timur or old spelling: Negara Indonesia Timoer ) was a federal state founded by the Netherlands in 1948 in the eastern part of the Dutch East Indies . It was proclaimed during the Malino Conference in 1946 and was part of the United States of Indonesia from 1949 until its dissolution in 1950.
history
After the end of the Second World War , the Netherlands convened a conference from July 16 to 25, 1946, to regulate the future of Indonesia. At the Malino Conference it was decided to establish the former Dutch colony in a federal state on Borneo and another on the smaller islands. At the Denpasar Conference from December 18 to 24, 1946, a constitution was drawn up and finally a state was proclaimed on December 24.
With the establishment of the United States of Indonesia on December 27, 1949, Eastern Indonesia became part of this union. After the government of the state decided to join the new Republic of Indonesia in 1950, revolts broke out among the Christian islands of the Moluccas and eventually they proclaimed a Republic of the Southern Moluccas . The United States of Indonesia was disbanded on August 17, 1950, and the uprisings put down in November.
geography
The state included Celebes , the Moluccas with their offshore islands, Bali and the Lesser Sunda Islands with the exception of the Portuguese East Timor . The capital was Makassar on what is now South Sulawesi .
administration
Eastern Indonesia was divided into five federal states, which were divided into districts ( Dutch afdeling ) and sub- districts ( Dutch onderafdeling ). The provinces were further divided into 13 autonomous regions: Südcelebes , Minahasa , Sangihe and Talaud , Nordcelebes , Zentralcelebes , Bali , Lombok , Soembawa , Flores , Soemba , Timor with the surrounding islands, the South and the North Moluccas . The states were dissolved after the regions established a functioning administration.
