Oswin Koehler
Oswin Reinhold Albin Köhler (born October 14, 1911 in Tiefthal , now part of Erfurt ; † May 2, 1996 in Cologne ) was a German Africanist .
Life
Oswin Köhler graduated from the Reformrealgymnasium in Erfurt in 1929 . The linguist went on study trips to southeast and southern Europe . In 1938 Köhler took up his first position as a translator for European languages at the High Command of the Wehrmacht in Berlin . At the same time, Oswin Köhler studied African languages and ethnology as a guest student at the Friedrich Wilhelm University . In 1943 he passed the Swahili translator exam at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences .
After Oswin Köhler was released from American captivity in 1946, enrolled him in 1946 at the now more renamed Humboldt University, where he continued translate the studies of African Studies and Ethnology, 1948 took place its graduation to the Dr. phil. In 1952 he completed his habilitation there as a private lecturer in African studies.
After moving into the Federal Republic of Germany Koehler was at the 1954 University of Cologne umhabilitiert . Köhler, who was appointed adjunct professor there in 1961, was appointed full professor and director of the Institute for African Studies the following year, and in 1977 he retired .
In addition to working on Gur , Bantu and Nilotic languages , Oswin Köhler mainly devoted himself to researching the Bushman languages and cultures of southern Africa .
Köhler died in 1996 at the age of 84. His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hall 61).
