Otto Braun (politician, 1904)

Otto Braun (born May 9, 1904 in Melsungen ; † December 1, 1986 ) was a German entrepreneur and Hessian politician ( FDP ) and a former member of the Hessian state parliament .

Otto Braun attended secondary school and did a commercial apprenticeship, which was followed by a two-year stay abroad. In 1924 he completed a degree in commercial science at the University and Commercial College in Leipzig. In 1926 he took over the commercial management and in 1929 became owner of his father's company, B. Braun Melsungen . His son Ludwig Georg Braun followed him in the management of the family business.

During the National Socialist era , Otto Braun joined the NSDAP without being active in the party. Otto Braun was a member of the FDP after the Second World War and was a city councilor in Melsungen for his party from 1952 to 1960 and from 1964 to 1969. In the city parliament he was head of the city council from 1952 to 1956. From 1952 to 1972 he was also a member of the Melsungen district council , where he was chairman of the FDP parliamentary group from 1952 to 1956. From December 1, 1954 to November 30, 1958, he was a member of the Hessian state parliament. From 1950 to 1966 Vice President and 1967 to May 31, 1974 President of the Kassel Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

In 1968 he was honored with the Philipps plaque from the Philipps University of Marburg . From June 1, 1974 Otto Braun was Honorary President of the IHK Kassel. The city of Melsungen honored him on his 100th birthday with a life-size bronze statue and made him an honorary citizen . In 1974 he received the Great Federal Cross of Merit with a Star and the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal . Otto Braun-Strasse in Melsungen was named after Otto Braun. The Otto Braun Foundation, which supports scholarships for young academics and young artists with 200,000 euros annually, is named after him.
