Otto Clemens Fikentscher (born February 28, 1831 in Aachen , † November 12, 1880 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter, draftsman and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School . A possible relationship with the painter of the same name Otto Fikentscher , married to the painter Jenny Fikentscher , has not been clarified.

Life

Otto Fikentscher (the elder) began his studies in 1851, initially in the “Antikensaal” of the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which was directed by Karl Ferdinand Sohn , and changed, like his friends Ernst Bosch , Robert Cauer the Elder . Ä. and Carl Thiel, in 1853 in the painting class of Theodor Hildebrandt . He trained in the field of history painting and, according to his special talent, devoted himself above all to the representation of horses in historical and current equestrian battles or in maneuver scenes, which dominate his oeuvre in addition to pure animal scenes . 1856/1857 he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten in Düsseldorf. After spending a few years in Stuttgart and Munich, he returned to Düsseldorf and settled here for good. In 1864 he - August Beck , Emil Hünten , Wilhelm Camphausen and Adolph Northen - belonged to the contingent of Düsseldorf artists who were sent to the theater of war as reporters during the German-Danish war around Schleswig-Holstein , and their works were subsequently shown in exhibitions in Düsseldorf and nationwide. He also worked as a reporter during the German War in 1866 and the Franco-German War in 1870/1871. He recorded the impressions he gained there in drawings and converted them into paintings and illustrations. The latter appeared as reproductions in the technique of wood engraving in many of the popular magazines, such as Die Gartenlaube - Illustrirtes Familienblatt and Über Land und Meer . He also discussed historical war events such as the Battle of Waterloo . Two works shown at the Düsseldorf Art Association in August 1861, Prussian Artillery in Combat and Battle Picture, commented on a report: “Fickentscher [showed] a liveliness that bordered on the wild, but also a certain frivolity in drawing. However, he is forgiven for his drawing errors, given the boldness of the composition. "
