Otto Dörr (born December 3, 1831 in Ludwigslust , † November 18, 1868 in Dresden ; full name: Otto Erich Friedrich August Dörr ) was a German portrait , architecture, genre , animal and landscape painter .

Life

Otto Dörr was born in 1831 as the son of the court attendant Konrad Dörr and grew up with six siblings. Already before 1845 he received lessons in drawing from the engraver Hoffmann in Ludwigslust. Around 1845 this was followed by drawing lessons with the Mecklenburg-Schwerin court painter Friedrich Christian Georg Lenthe in Ludwigslust. From 1850 to 1852 Dörr studied at the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts and under Carl Steffeck and Franz Krüger in Berlin.

From 1852 to 1856 Dörr stayed in Paris. There he was a student of Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps . In 1855 he took part in the world exhibition in Paris with the work View into a dye works .

After his return he worked as a portrait painter in Ludwigslust from 1856 before moving to Berlin in 1860 and from there to Dresden in 1862. On December 4, 1861, Otto Dörr married Bertha Staudinger, a relative of the economist Johann Heinrich von Thünen . The couple had three children. In 1867 he stayed with his painter colleague Julius Scholtz again in Paris for a few months and frequented Léon Bonnat's studio .
