Otto Gerlach (painter)
Otto Gerlach (born August 8, 1862 in Leipzig , † August 15, 1908 in Tehran ) was a German painter, draftsman and illustrator.
Life
Gerlach studied at the Royal Art Academy and Applied Arts School in Leipzig with Ludwig Nieper and from 1884 at the Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin with Anton von Werner , Otto Brausewetter and Horn.
Gerlach worked as a draftsman at the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 on behalf of the Illustrirten Zeitung . He also received orders from Le Monde illustré and stayed in Paris until 1891.
In 1898 he visited with German journalists Dalmatia and other countries on the Adriatic coast as well as London and in 1906 the Milan World Exhibition .
He provided many illustrations for the magazine Die Gartenlaube , but mostly for the Illustrirte Zeitung . His illustrations often showed scenes from the life of a soldier as well as war events, also in distant countries. He also illustrated numerous books of popular literature. As a painter he created only a few works; only four over- portals are known in the baroque Wachau Palace .
He died in Tehran of typhus during an automobile expedition to Persia organized by Rudolf Zabel , which he accompanied as a draftsman for the Illustrirte Zeitung .
