Otto Hess (born September 21, 1897 in Roggwil ; † December 13, 1988 ibid) was a Swiss politician of the farmers, trade and citizens' party (BGB).

biography

Otto Hess was born on September 21, 1897 as the son of the farmer Emil Hess in Roggwil. In 1922 he married Hermine Züllig, the daughter of the farmer Jean Züllig. After taking over his parents' farm , Otto Hess worked as a farmer until 1962. To this end, he was also involved in various organizations of milk producers and fruit growers . He played a major role in rescuing the Egnach fruit processing cooperative , which was about to go bankrupt and of which he was president for 34 years. He was also the founding president of the Sanitas health insurance company from 1958 to 1968 .

Otto Hess died on December 13, 1988 at the age of 91 in Roggwil. His son Otto also went into politics.

Political career

Hess began his political career as a member of the FDP , as which he was elected to the Thurgau Great Council on the so-called farmers list in 1935 , in which he joined the young farmers . In 1938 he was not re-elected to the list of the Peasant Homeland Movement. After he had turned away from her, he was again elected to the cantonal council in 1941 on the peasant list, to which he belonged until 1968 and which he presided over in 1946/47. From 1942 to 1967 Hess served in the National Council . From 1960 to 1963 he presided over the BGB parliamentary group, in 1963/64 he was President of the National Council . Otto Hess was represented in practically all relevant professional associations of farmers. From 1934 to 1970 he was on the board of the Thurgau Agricultural Cantonal Association. Under his presidium from 1943 to 1970, the farmers' secretariat was converted into a modern service center based in Weinfelden . In addition, he worked from 1941 on the board of the Swiss Farmers' Association .
