Otto Körner

Otto Maximilian Ferdinand Körner (born May 18, 1858 in Frankfurt am Main , † October 9, 1935 in Rostock ) was a German doctor for ear, nose and throat medicine . In Rostock he was given the first ENT chair at a German university in 1899.

family

Otto Körner was born in 1858 as the son of the Privy Councilor and Regional Court Director Wilhelm Körner and his wife Elise. In 1887 he married Louise Ebert (1861–1937) from Kassel, sister of the German geologist and paleontologist Theodor Ebert . The couple had three daughters.

Life

After graduating from high school, Körner studied medicine from 1878 at the Philipps University of Marburg , the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the Kaiser Wilhelms University of Strasbourg . With like-minded fellow students, he founded a scientific association that assumed the character of a corporation and was accepted into the Goslar Chargierten-Convent . In 1882 he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD. He then worked as an assistant doctor in the university clinics in Strasbourg and Frankfurt am Main. In 1886 he established himself as a general practitioner in Frankfurt am Main. In 1894 he was appointed to the vacated Extraordinariat for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases in Rostock. Under his direction, the new building of the first German university clinic for ear, nose and larynx diseases was opened on October 25, 1899. In 1901, Körner was appointed the first German professor for ear, nose and larynx diseases. When many special fields arose in medicine in the mid-19th century, laryngology and otology developed for the head and neck area . For the most part they stood on their own. Körner pushed their association forward. His textbook, published in 1906, was one of the first, if not the first, to introduce the subject in its entirety. It became a bestseller . Körner was rector of the University of Rostock from 1913 to 1914 . He held the position of clinic director until his retirement (1929).

Even as a schoolboy, Körner had published a contribution to Homer's wildlife in the Natural History Archives . As an emeritus he continued his studies of antiquity . His last publication dealt with the sensations in the Iliad and the Odyssey .
