Otto Ludwig von Kanitz (born September 6, 1661 in Nopkeim, Prussia , † February 8, 1724 in Spitzkunnersdorf ) was a colonel in the Saxon cavalry and the royal Polish army, as well as lord of the Hainewalde , Oderwitz , Spitzkunnersdorf, Mücka , Radischholz and Neundorf estates from the family of those von Kanitz . Among other things, he became known for the foundation of several churches and as the builder of the Kanitz-Kyawschen crypt in Hainewalde.

Life

Kanitz was born in 1661 as the third son from the second marriage of lieutenant colonel Christof Friedrich von Kanitz (1617–1680) in Nopkeim in Prussia. His mother was Susanna von Kreytz (en) . The royal Prussian major general Christoph Albrecht von Kanitz , father of the Prussian chamberlain Samuel Friedrich von Kanitz, came from an earlier marriage of his father .

Like his six brothers, he embarked on a military career and was in the Brandenburg, Bavarian and Saxon services. In 1680 he began his military service as an ensign in the fortress of Pillau under the Brandenburg general Count Wolfgang Christoph Truchsess von Waldburg . Promoted to lieutenant in 1682 , he served in the Brandenburg regiment of Prince Alexander von Kurland , which took part in the Great Turkish War . The 1684 Captain ( captain he was appointed) used by General Steward to Waldenburg in Ukraine, where he became seriously ill. In 1686 he took part in the siege of Ofen , in which his regimental commander, Prince of Courland, was killed. On the orders of the elector, Kanitz escorted the prince's body to Courland and took part in the funeral ceremonies. In 1688 he asked for permission to temporarily volunteer in Bavarian services in order to take part in the siege of Belgrade . Back in the service of Brandenburg, he fought against the troops of Louis XIV in the Rhineland . In 1692 he changed to the service of the Electoral Saxon as Mayor of the Cavalry and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1694 . He took part in a campaign against French armies on the Middle Rhine and was appointed colonel of the cavalry in 1697 . In 1698 he was involved in the campaign against the Turks in Podolia and in 1699, at the age of 38, retired from the Saxon-Polish military service.

In 1700 he married Victoria Tugendreich von Kyaw , but their marriage remained childless. After the wedding, Victoria sold her husband's goods in Hainewalde, Spitzkunnersdorf and Oderwitz. This is how he came into possession of the old Renaissance castle from 1565, which he and his wife worked to preserve. At this time Kanitz also had churches built in Hainewalde , Niederoderwitz and Spitzkunnersdorf . Together with his wife, he commissioned the construction of the church school in 1702 and a hospital in Hainewalde in 1703. He also founded the Hainewald church library.

From 1715 he devoted himself to building the family crypt, the Kanitz-Kyaw crypt . His wife died in 1717 at the age of 60, he himself died in 1724, both were buried in the crypt he had built. He bequeathed his property to his wife's great niece, Christiane Tugendreich von Kyaw. This in turn married his nephew Samuel Friedrich von Kanitz , who bought his wife's property and had the new Hainewalde Castle built.
