Vorländer, offspring of a Protestant parsonage from the Sauerland , began studying painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy on October 1, 1872 . There he was initially a pupil of the elementary class of Andreas Müller and Heinrich Lauenstein , from 1873 he then attended Wilhelm Lotz's construction class for two years . In October 1875 he passed the examination as a drawing teacher for higher educational institutions at the Düsseldorf Academy. In 1876 he took up a position as a drawing teacher at the Dortmund trade school . From Easter 1878 to Easter 1879 he continued his studies at the Prussian Academy of the Arts in Berlin. He then became a "proper technical teacher" at the model school in Frankfurt am Main . He gave up this position at Easter 1882 in order to devote himself entirely to painting. He went to Munich , where he made friends with Julius Langbehn . From 1884 to 1886 he again attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy. There he was taught first in the preparatory class by Hugo Crola and then in the antiquities and nature class by Peter Janssen the Elder . Then he became a teacher at the building trade school in Barmen . From the 1890s at the latest, Vorländer was active in the field of documentation and restoration of wall and ceiling paintings as well as glass windows. From 1897, when he was a teacher at the Herzogliche Baugewerkeschule Holzminden , he also appeared in publications on the history of architecture and art.
