Otto Walter (archaeologist)

Otto Walter (born September 22, 1882 in Vienna , † February 15, 1965 in Parsch ) was an Austrian classical archaeologist .

Emil Reisch's pupil worked from 1908 to 1938, then director at the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Athens . After the annexation of Austria until 1945 he was an additional 2nd secretary of the Athens branch of the Archaeological Institute of the German Empire. In 1945 he became honorary professor at the University of Vienna , in 1948 professor in Innsbruck . From 1951 until his retirement in 1953, Walter was the successor to Camillo Praschnikers professor in Vienna and together with Josef Keil director of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAI). He was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

During his time at the ÖAI Athens, Walter continued the excavations in Elis from 1911 to 1914 and founded the Austrian excavations in Aigeira with two campaigns in 1916 and 1925 .
