The city was founded on May 20, 1960 and is one of the youngest parishes in the county. In 1960 the city had only 28,085 inhabitants and an area of ​​44.5 km². In 1990 it had 111,790 inhabitants and an area of ​​146 km². In 2005 the city had 167,000 inhabitants on an area of ​​161 km². On April 13, 2014, a 73-year-old Ku Klux Klan member shot dead three people in two Jewish facilities in Overland Park. The perpetrator was arrested.
