Périgord noir (tourism)

The Périgord noir is one of the four tourist subdivisions of the Périgord , together with the Périgord blanc , the Périgord pourpre and the Périgord vert .

etymology

The French adjective noir means black in German . The color refers to the dark forests characteristic of this region and not - as is often wrongly claimed - to black truffles .

The Périgord noir - as a more recent tourist term - occupies the east and south-east of the Dordogne department . However, it is not congruent with the historical Périgord noir landscape . The latter is much more narrowly defined as it does not extend to the Pays d'Hautefort further north .
