Périgord noir (tourism)
The Périgord noir is one of the four tourist subdivisions of the Périgord , together with the Périgord blanc , the Périgord pourpre and the Périgord vert .
etymology
The French adjective noir means black in German . The color refers to the dark forests characteristic of this region and not - as is often wrongly claimed - to black truffles .
geography
The Périgord noir - as a more recent tourist term - occupies the east and south-east of the Dordogne department . However, it is not congruent with the historical Périgord noir landscape . The latter is much more narrowly defined as it does not extend to the Pays d'Hautefort further north .
In addition to the sub-prefecture of Sarlat-la-Canéda , the following more important municipalities are located in the Périgord noir:
- Belvès
- Beynac
- Carlux
- Domme
- Hautefort
- Les Eyzies-de-Tayac
- Limeuil
- Montignac
- Rouffignac
- Salignac Eyvigues
- Terrasson
- Villefranche-du-Périgord
