PR science
PR science is a sub-discipline of communicator research within communication science and denotes the institutionalized, scientific occupation with public relations or public relations and communication management. The approach of a PR science is interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary and has points of contact with sociology , social psychology , economics , political science and occasionally with media studies . PR science is primarily concerned with PR theory, PR history , the description of the professional field and questions of PR ethics. Especially in more recent publications, with reference to organizational theory, PR is only understood as a sub-area of a higher-level organizational communication. In this context, the entire branch of research is also referred to as organizational communication or organizational communication research.

History of PR science in Germany
While journalism - the scientific preoccupation with journalism - has dominated communication science research since the 1950s, empirical, communication science PR research only began to emerge in German-speaking countries in the late 1980s. At this time, practical approaches predominated in research.
At the end of the 1980s and in the 1990s there was an increasing scientification. In 1979, Franz Ronneberger , then head of the Institute for Journalism at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg , founded the Association for the Promotion of Public Relations Research together with Heinz Flieger .
Since the 1990s, due to increasing institutionalization and professionalization, which is reflected in a large number of chairs, newly established university courses, researcher meetings and research companies with a focus on PR research, one can speak of PR science in German-speaking countries .
The first own chair for PR in Germany was established in 1994 at the University of Leipzig . Since 2000, the SPRL ( Foundation for the Promotion of PR Science at the University of Leipzig ) has been a separate science foundation for PR science, which awards grants and honors excellent theses. The Federal Association of Communicators also awards a prize for young talent for theses related to PR.
Research societies
The Public Relations and Organizational Communication section of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies (DGPuK) has existed since 1992 and today forms the focus of German-language PR science with its regular researcher meetings and conferences.
At the European level, the European Public Relations Education and Research Association (EUPRERA), an association of European PR researchers and teachers, has existed since 2000. Among other things, the European Communication Monitor study, which has been carried out annually since 2007, focuses on PR trends -Business is carried out.
Chairs and courses
In July 2010, there were eleven PR master’s courses in Germany , three of them at universities, five at universities of applied sciences and three part-time programs.
