The Federal Association of Communicators (BdKom; until September 2019 Federal Association of German Press Spokesmen, BdP) is a professional association for communications managers , especially press spokesmen . With around 4,500 members, it is the association with the largest number of members in the German communications industry, alongside organizations such as DPRG and degepol .
The BdKom makes specialist media and events available as forums. The organ of the association is the magazine's press spokesman .
history
The association was founded in October 2003 under the name of the Federal Association of German Press Spokesmen ( BdP for short ) as a registered association . At the association's general meeting on September 11, 2019 in Berlin, the members decided to rename the association to the Federal Association of Communicators (BdKom) and agreed to the required amendment to the statutes. This was justified by the fact that identification with the term press spokesman had decreased. In the future, the company also wants to address those responsible for communication outside of the media relations area , in particular younger communication officers from the field of digital communication, and win them over as members. After the amendment to the articles of association, the association brand is to be further developed according to the new name.
Self-image
The association also represents the interests of its members in parliament. The association got involved in the discussion about the authorization of interviews and advocated the interests of communications officers in copyright matters. The association has also drawn up guidelines for giving journalists' gifts, as well as for situations that require counter notifications in the media.
The association does active image work for the profession by sharpening the profile of the press spokesman. It differentiates its members from related professional groups and thus promotes the development of a clearly defined professional self-image. In addition, he supports the next generation of communication professionals and professionalization in the PR industry through further training measures.
Internationalization is another goal of the BdKom. The association would therefore like to focus more on European issues and network at this level as well. That is why the BdKom initiated a European initiative, the European Association of Communication Directors , based in Brussels.
Together with the German Public Relations Society and the Public Relations Agencies Society , the BdKom has also been the sponsor of the German Council for Public Relations , founded in 1987 , an institution for voluntary self-regulation by PR professionals.

- Qualification for young talent: In joint sponsorship with the Society for Public Relations Agencies (GPRA) and the German Public Relations Society (DPRG), the BdKom founded the testing and certification organization of the German communications industry (PZOK) and thus creates the basis for uniform and rewarded degrees in the communications industry.
- Protection of professional interests and promotion of the profession's image
- Specialist events and workshops as well as special event formats of the individual regional and specialist groups
- Service brochures on current topics in the daily work of the press spokesman
- The association organizes the annual communications congress, the largest PR conference in Europe. The highlight of the congress is the Speakersnight gala.
- Study profession press spokesman - measurement of a profession : In 2005 the study was published for the first time, which helps to clearly define and delimit the profession of communications officer. Further editions appeared in 2007 and 2009, and since then the study has been collected every three years with new data in order to record current developments in the industry.
- Each year the association awards a thesis with the young talent award. You can submit master's, master's or diploma theses that deal with a communication science topic. The age limit for participants is 35 years.
- With the establishment of a Young Professional Network, the association supports selected young PR professionals as part of their university education and offers them the opportunity to come into contact with PR practitioners.
Industry award golden apple
The association awards the Golden Apple Prize annually , initially as a journalist prize. Since 2007, the BdKom has been honoring outstanding PR and public relations as the press office of the year . The Golden Apple has been awarded in the three categories of politics / administration, associations / NGOs and companies since 2012. Prize winners:
