The former parcel post hall (officially "Gleishalle des Paketpostamtes") is a cantilevered precast concrete hall built between 1965 and 1969 northeast of the Friedenheimer Brücke in Munich with flat circular segment arches, with a span of 146.8 meters, a height of 27.3 meters and a Length of 124 meters was the largest of its kind in the world at the time. 15 tracks led into the 20,000 m² folding arch hall, which until May 31, 1997 was a transhipment point for parcels . In 1996 the hall was officially granted monument status. After a renovation, Deutsche Post AG has been using the building as the BZ80 mail center since June 1998 . In 2018, Deutsche Post sold the building, including the surrounding property of around 100,000 square meters, to the Büschl Group.

architecture

The building, which was built by the architects Rudolf Rosenfeld and Herbert Zettel with Ulrich Finsterwalder with the engineering planning by Helmut Bomhard and the structural planning by Paul Gollwitzer, based on a design by the Deutsche Bundespost , consists of two three-cell front and 24 normal arches. The latter are made up of two inclined, 8.5 cm thick and 3.8 t heavy parts. All 1584 precast elements have the same dimensions. The shell construction of the vault, built in the Zeiss-Dywidag shell construction, is both a supporting structure and building envelope and does not require an additional roof skin . Its minimalist construction attracted attention when it was built because it is “thinner than the shell of a hen's egg ”: the vault thickness and radius have a ratio of 1: 375, while the ratio of an eggshell is 1:75.

Rosenfeld's design originally envisaged a pure concrete structure in the form of a column line parabola with reinforced concrete hollow box girders, connecting reinforced concrete purlins and a light roof skin made of aluminum sheet . In the invitation to tender, however, Dyckerhoff & Widmann was able to prevail with the special solution of the folded, arched planar structure made of prefabricated concrete elements.

Outside the track hall, an eleven-meter-high low-rise building for the distribution of parcels and parcels was placed in front of the cross platform in the west. A 64 × 176 meter through packing chamber was divided by the spiral of the parcel chutes. Personnel rooms and company offices were connected in a two-storey block. On the side, the parcel station was framed by the vehicle loading hall in the south and the horseshoe-shaped delivery halls built around an access courtyard in the north, each of which docked directly on the cross platform. The Munich 3 parcel post office for direct collectors is located in the head building of the delivery hall facing Arnulfstrasse . An eight-storey high - rise building for the postal administration on Arnulfstrasse sets the tone for the beginning and the end of the ensemble. The two-storey canteen lay at the apex of a fan of the path in the western garden gusset.

After the end of its use as a parcel post hall, all tracks and platforms were removed in 1997 and a simple, reversible industrial hall made of steel framework ( Donges steel construction system ) for the letter sorting systems was built on the 20,000 square meter roofed area by the vault . The vault thus only had the function of a passive climate envelope for the mail center. The through packing chamber was torn down, and in its place a much smaller access zone for trucks was created on the western front side. The side vehicle loading hall was removed down to the basement. Park green was planted on the newly built ceiling of the warehouse and office wing.

reception

According to the architecture critic Gerhard Matzig , the parcel post hall was considered a “sensation” when it was built, the “monumental concrete frame” has something like a monster of the dinosaur age lurking in the sand ”. "The beautiful one breaks all standards, she is gigantic, titanic, yes wonderful." Enthuses Matzig. For Friedbert Kind-Barkauskas , the effect of the building inside and out is determined by its clear and spacious construction. The architecture critic Ira Mazzoni also reminds the "conspicuously folded barrel vault next to the wide track bed of Munich Central Station", which "was considered a technical miracle at the time of its construction", of "a dinosaur".

Usage plans

The renovation in 1997 was preceded by unsuccessful attempts to sell the parcel post hall by Deutsche Post. In 2015, the Post announced that it was considering moving the mail center to a suburb, making the parcel post hall the favorite for building a new philharmonic hall for several years . After the state government then decided to build the concert hall in the Werksviertel in the Berg am Laim district , plans began for a transitional quarter for the Munich Philharmonic in the parcel post hall until the Post revised its move plans in March 2017. In 2017, the architectural office Allmann Sattler Wappner presented drafts, in which another steel shell around the vault and on top of it a terrace living in lightweight construction with 18,500 m² of living space for 500 people, facing south-west and north-east. A hotel, offices and areas for sport, business or culture should be located below the roof. In 2018, the parcel post hall was a favorite for the potential location of a new Ikea furniture store . After the sale to the Büschl Group in 2018, the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron was commissioned to plan the future use of the hall and the surrounding area to create a district center with a “broad concept with commercial, residential, social and facilities for the young and old ”.
