Palamedes Palamedesz (* 1607 in London , † March 26, 1638 in Delft ), also called Stevers, Stevens or Stevaerts , was a Dutch battle and portrait painter .

Life

Palamdesz was born in London because his father, a Flemish man who made dishes such as cups, bowls or vases from agate , jasper , porphyry and similar precious stones, had traveled to King James of Scotland for an assignment . Since his stay there at court in London was to last for a long time, he was accompanied by his pregnant wife, who gave birth to her son there. The family then returned to Delft, where the boy was raised and lived for life. Most of the skills he acquired autodidactically, so he copied pictures by the painter Esaias van de Velde , which influenced his style so much that his own cavalry battles and war scenes were very similar. In 1627, at the age of 20, he was accepted as a master in the painters' guild of the city of Delft. In 1631 Palamedesz was in Antwerp , where he was portrayed by Anthony van Dyck . He was a student of his older brother, Anthonie Palamedesz. who joined the Delft Lucas guild in 1636.

Works by him can be found in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and in the Army History Museum in Vienna . He made some of the paintings together with Esaias van de Velde, such as the camp scene (123 × 190 cm) at which van der Velde designed the landscapes and Palamedesz. the figures.
