The Royal Palace ( Italian : Palazzo Reale ) of Milan is the city palace of Milan. The Habsburgs in Lombardy , among others, resided here . The residence is located in the southeast of the cathedral square .

The current exterior and interior appearance was shaped under the rule of Empress Maria Theresa : The palace was rebuilt in 1778 by Giuseppe Piermarini for Ferdinand Karl von Österreich-Este (1754–1806) . After the reunification of Italy under the Savoy, the castle was raised to their city residence, but in 1919 the royal family handed it over to the Italian state.

The east wing of the building had already been cut when the cathedral square was created. Another impairment occurred in the 1930s: around 60 meters of the long wing were sacrificed for the construction of the fascist Palazzo dell'Arengario .

The castle suffered severe fire damage on August 15, 1943 as a result of a British bombing raid. The ceiling of the Caryatid Hall collapsed. The renovation of the castle was initially slow and partial. The castle has only been fully restored since the turn of the millennium.
