Pandemie (original title: Gamgi , in German 'flu'; intl. Title: The Flu ) is a South Korean disaster film from 2013 by director Kim Sung-su . The film is about an outbreak of a deadly disease that plunges metropolitan Seoul into chaos. In the course of the global COVID-19 pandemic , the film was advertised as a virus thriller on August 6, 2020 and was released in German cinemas under the title Pandemic .

A man smuggles illegal immigrants into South Korea and suddenly dies of infection from an unknown virus . Other people in the region also get sick from the pathogen and die from it. The number of infected people in the Seongnam district of Bundang is rising rapidly and government troops are trying to cordon off the area and a quarantine station is being set up to prevent the disease from breaking out again. Meanwhile, virus researcher In-hae and rescue worker Ji-koo try to develop a vaccine that will fight the virus by taking a blood sample from the first victim. The government is doing all it can to stop the disease from spreading. Just before the situation begins to escalate, the antibodies to the virus are found and the city recovers.

The film opened in South Korean cinemas on August 14, 2013 and reached over 3.1 million admissions. The reviews were mixed. Beyond Hollywood says: "Kim Sung-su's approach shows a good balance between character drama, conspiracy and tension and that clearly helps to push the dreaded tears and hysteria into the background." Rüdiger Suchsland gave the film a positive review. The film is realistic and reminds of the immediate present. The film combines "excellent entertainment, love, humor and tension" and is popular entertainment cinema: "Funny, exciting, grotesque, overdrawn, garish and precise". Knut Elstermann rated the film 3 out of 5 stars.

  • The original title of the film can be translated as flu . The film is about a mutated strain of the H5N1 flu virus .
  • Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic , the film was released in Taiwan and Germany in 2020 , seven years after it was first released.
  • In Mexico, pirate copiers created a new cover for the film called Coronavirus in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic . El inicio de la epidemia ("Coronavirus - The Beginning of the Epidemic"), which received some attention online . The real Mexican title of the film is Virus .
  • In the description of the German distributor for the film, Bundang is incorrectly referred to as a coastal city. In fact, Bundang is a district of Seongnam , far from the coast and adjacent to the Gangnam district of Seoul .
  • The German title is "Pandemie". However, a pandemic refers to a global outbreak, while in the film the outbreak is limited to one or two cities. So the film is an epidemic . The managing director of the Busch Media Group said that they were inspired by the French title ( Pandémie ).
