Paolo Fantin

Paolo Fantin (born 1981 in Castelfranco Veneto ) is an Italian set designer who has been working continuously with director Damiano Michieletto since 2005 .

Life

Fantin studied stage design at the Istituto Statale d'Arte in Venice. In February 2004 he received his diploma from the Accademia di belle arti di Venezia . Since he took part in the international competition for directing and stage design “ Ring Award ” in Graz with the young director Damiano Michieletto the following year (and the two reached the final there with Le nozze di Figaro ), the two artists have worked closely and continuously.

Michieletto and Fantin worked on Britten's children 's opera The Little Sweep (at the Luglio Musicale Trapanese in Sicily), the play Il Friuli by Pier Paolo Pasolini and the world premiere of the opera La bella e la bestia by Marco Tutino (in Modena). This was followed by Nino Rota's Il has paglia di Firenze (in Genoa), the Italian premiere of Michael Daugherty's Jackie O at the Lugo Opera Festival , two spectacular successes with La gazza ladra and Sigismondo at the Rossini Opera Festival Pesaro and finally an equally successful Sigismondo at the theater Regio di Torino .

The two artists worked closely together over many years with the Teatro La Fenice , where they staged Mozart's three Da Ponte operas , and with the Zurich Opera House , where they performed for the first time in German-speaking countries in 2008 at the invitation of Alexander Pereira worked. Model productions by Lucia di Lammermoor , Il corsaro , Luisa Miller and Poliuto were created in Zurich . For Don Giovanni and Sigismondo , Paolo Fantin and the set designer Carla Teti , who has been working with Michieletto since 2004, received the prestigious Premio Franco Abbiati 2011 for best set design and best costumes.

The international career of the Michieletto / Fantin team continued in Valencia, at the Grand Théâtre de Genève and in Tokyo. Finally, Michieletto, Fantin and Teti made their debut together in summer 2012 in a top-class La Bohème at the Salzburg Festival , with Piotr Beczała , Anna Netrebko , Massimo Cavalletti and Nino Machaidze singing . The three of them returned to Salzburg in 2013 for Giuseppe Verdi's Falstaff and the two of them - now with the costume designer Agostino Cavalca - in 2014 for Gioachino Rossini's La Cenerentola . They were invited again by Pereira, who was director of the Salzburg Festival from 2012 to 2014.

Puccini's Trittico at Theater an der Wien followed in autumn 2012 , a production that was subsequently shown at Det Kongelige Teater København . 2013 both artists worked for the first time at the Scala di Milano , they gave Un ballo in maschera by Giuseppe Verdi . This was followed by an Idomeneo in the Theater an der Wien, which was acclaimed by the audience and critics . In the 2014/15 season, the director and set designer will make their debut at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, each with a Rossini opera.
