Live and act

Paolo Golinelli graduated from high school in Mirandola in 1967. In 1972 he completed his studies in Lettere Moderne under Ovidio Capitani at the University of Bologna . From 1972 to 1984 he was accordingly a teacher of Italian literature, but also of history at middle and high schools in the Modena area . From 1984 to 1988 he was an alumnus at the Scuola Nazionale di Studi Medievali , and then from 1988 to 2000 he did research on medieval history at the University of Verona. From 2000 to 2011 he was Associate Professor and from 2011 to 2016 Full Professor of Medieval History at the University of Verona, namely at the Dipartimento “Tempo, Spazio, Immagine e Società”. He has been retired since October 11, 2016.

His main research interests are religion and society in the Middle Ages, hagiography and veneration of saints, Mathilde von Canossa and medieval monasticism. Of the Italian medievalists, it was Golinelli who dealt most intensively with Mathilde von Canossa in the last three decades. He submitted numerous studies on her. Golinelli examined Mathilde's relationship with her mother and Pope Gregory VII, the political relationship between Mathilde and Heinrich V , Mathilde's alleged adoption of Guido Guerra around 1099, the role of Margravine Mathilde in the founding of the monastery of Orval , the relationship between Archbishop Anselm von Canterbury and Mathilde, on the origin of the Countess myth or the reception of Mathilde over the centuries. Golinelli believes that Mathilde's donation to the Curia in 1102 was a forgery from the 1830s. Instead, Mathilde made Heinrich V her only heir in 1110/11. Golinelli has coordinated and organized numerous international conferences. For the 900th anniversary of Mathilde's meeting with her allies in Carpineti, a congress was held in October 1992, financially supported by the Province of Reggio Emilia . Golinelli published the papers for this meeting in 1994. An international congress in Reggio Emilia in September 1997 was devoted to her afterlife in cultural and literary terms. Golinelli published the articles in 1999. In 1991 he published a biography of Mathilde, which was translated into German in 1998. In 2008 he published an edition of the most important source on Mathilde, the Vita Mathildis by Donizo. In 2003 he published an account of the various pictures of Mathilde over the centuries. From 2010 to 2015 he was director of the Centro Studi Matildici.

Since 1979 he has headed the working group Storia del monastero di San Benedetto Polirone , which deals with the history of the Polirone monastery southeast of Mantua and from which eight publications have emerged. With Bruno Andreolli he published a bibliography on the Canusinian house monastery Polirone in 1983. The bibliography is limited to the Middle Ages up to 1420 and lists 648 titles. With Rosella Rinaldi and Carla Villani, he published an edition in 1993 with 113 documents from the period 961 and 1125. The greatest challenge for the edition was collecting the material, as the documents are widely scattered in Northern Italy. He published the second part of the document edition for the period 1126 to 1200 with Rosella Rinaldi in 2011. He published the third part for the period from 1201 to 1464 with Emanuela Lanza in 2016. In 1998, Golinelli was the editor of an anthology on the history of the Polirone monastery from 961 to 1125. He himself dealt with the connections between Margravine Mathilde and the monastery. He was President of the Scientific Committee for the Polirones Millennium Jubilee (1007-2007). In 2009 he published an exhibition catalog on the Polirone Monastery on art and history from 1007 to 2007.

On the 900th anniversary of the death of Bishop Anselm II of Lucca in Mantua , an international scientific congress was organized in May 1986 by the city, diocese and province of Mantua in collaboration with the Lombardia region and the University of Bologna . Anselm found his grave in Mantua and is considered the city's patron. Golinelli edited the conference papers a year later. In 1996 he published a description of Pope Celestine V. In 2001 he published a work on Adelheid of Burgundy , the wife of Otto the Great .
