history

Origins

The building substance is early medieval and goes back to a church building from the 6th or 7th century, consecrated under the patronage of Albin von Lyon .

middle Ages

The late Gothic brought extensions: the nave was built in 1488 and the choir in its polygonal shape in 1494 . Presumably from this time comes the salvator head on the end stone of the vaulted ceiling, which is conspicuous by the smile of Christ . During the Swabian War in 1499, the nave fell victim to pillage. In 1501 it was rebuilt in its present form.

Reformation time

Pastor Alexius Bertschin from Constance began to preach Martin Luther's thoughts in Ermatingen in 1524 . He was threatened by the Frauenfeld bailiffs and fled back to Constance. In 1529, Bern accepted the Reformation and took over the protection of the Reformed in the areas assigned to it and the subject countries, including Thurgau as common rule . Bertschin has now been called back to Ermatingen as a Protestant pastor.

The Reichenau abbot objected to this. Ermatingen was his beneficiary land , and to secure it he sent a Catholic priest in 1536 to read early mass in Ermatingen. This resulted in denominational parity in the small town on Lake Constance , which continues to this day . But it was not until the Second Kappeler Landfriede that there was a real balance between the two confessions in Ermatingen.

Modern times

From 1696 to 1780 the church was rebuilt on a large scale - accompanied by serious differences on the question of which denomination was to be in charge. Johann Michael Beer von Bildstein - and thus the Catholic side - was primarily responsible for the implementation. Stucco work was attached to the ceiling of the ship, and the choir vault was covered with wall paintings. The Constance painter Franz Ludwig Hermann portrayed church fathers , important popes and saints . In the choir, three columns symbolize Mary with the baby Jesus, Saint Albin as the patron saint of the sacred building and the martyr Catherine of Alexandria .

organ

The organ was built in 1952 by the organ builder Theodor Kuhn, and in 1990 it was installed and reorganized in a new organ case . The slider chests -instrument has 27 registers on two manuals and pedal . The action actions are mechanical, the stop actions are pneumatic.
