Description and future

The park at the television tower was built between 1965–1973 according to plans by Dieter Bankert , Manfred Prasser and Hubert Matthes . A 60-degree angle to the tower axis, which determined the shape of the green and water areas as well as the inclined position of the Marienkirche , formed the basis of the planning. At the foot of the television tower , a terrace leads over to the main axis of the park, which is designed with water cascades , rose parterres and ornamental trees . The side rooms on Karl-Liebknechtstrasse and Rathausstrasse are characterized by lawns, linden and maple trees . There are paved meeting places in front of the Marienkirche and the Rotes Rathaus . In addition to the eponymous television tower and the medieval St. Mary's Church, the park also contains the Neptune Fountain by Reinhold Begas , which was formerly set up on Schloßplatz , the Luther monument by Paul Otto and the group of construction workers by Fritz Cremer . The future of the park at the television tower has been discussed since 1990, with ideas ranging from preserving the green area to rebuilding the Marienviertel.
