The Lato was a ferry of the Greek shipping company ANEK Lines . It was created in 1975 under the name Daisetsu for the Japanese Taiheiyo Enkai Zosen KK. The Lato has been in service for ANEK since 1989 and has been in service on the route from Piraeus to Chania since 1997 . In September 2014 it was retired and renamed twice before it was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey in 2018 .

Service in Japan

The Daisetsu was built under hull number 388 in the Naikai Zosen Yards yard in Setoda (now part of Onomichi ) and was launched on March 28, 1975. The delivery to the owner took place on June 20 of the same year. The Daisetsu started the ferry service between Nagoya , Sendai and Tomakomai . She had an identical sister ship with the Ishikari, which was put into service in 1974 .

In 1980 the Daisetsu was extended from the original 175.6 to 188.4 meters. Their tonnage increased from 11,879 to 15,404 GT and the passenger capacity from 674 to 1564 people. Her sister ship also received this extension. Then the Daisetsu returned to its old route.

In 1985 the ship became the property of Higashi Nihon Ferry Co Ltd. over and was named Varuna . She served another two years in ferry service and was then retired.

Service in Greece

The new owner in 1987 was the Greek ANEK Lines, who named the ferry Lato . The ship was transferred to Piraeus, where it was rebuilt and modernized for further service from August 1987. It was not until 1989 that the Lato started ferry service between Patras , Igoumenitsa , Corfu and Ancona .

In 1997 the ship switched to service from Piraeus to Chania, where it was to remain for most of the time until the end of its career. The following ten years of service passed without major events. On March 16, 2007 the Lato collided with a quay wall in heavy seas in the port of Chania and was slightly damaged on the hull. The ship then returned to Piraeus for repairs.

Between June and October 2007 the Lato was in service between Algiers and Marseille under the charter of the shipping company CNAN . During this time, the ship suffered engine damage in the port of Marseille in August 2007 and was in Perama for repairs until September . After the charter contract expired, the ferry was used again by ANEK between Piraeus and Chania.

From June to September 2012 the Lato was briefly used between Bari and Durrës before switching back to its old service route. She stayed there until August 2014.

In August 2014, the Libyan government chartered the ship and had it transferred to Tobruk . On September 6 of the same year, the Lato returned to Greece, but did not return to active service. It was in Souda launched . In May 2015 the Lato was supposed to be sold to India for scrapping because the port authority of Souda wanted to use the berth of the ferry for cruise ships . However, the planned scrapping did not take place. From August 2015 the Lato was instead in Perama.

In February 2016, the Marshall Islands- based Laton Shipping SA bought the ship and named it Laton . The ferry flew first under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis , then later that month under the flag of the Bahamas . Still, the Laton never returned to service. In 2017 it was renamed again and was henceforth called Talaton . A planned use of the ferry as a hotel ship by the shipping company Seajets was not realized due to the size of the ship.

On June 18, 2018, the Talaton , sold for scrapping, left the port of Perama under tug and arrived at the Aliağa demolition yard on June 20. Her sister ship had already been scrapped in India in 2011.
