Election to the House of Representatives in the Czech Republic in 1998
The House of Representatives in the Czech Republic 1998 to the House of Representatives took place on June 19 and 20, 1998. It was an early election.
background
In December 1997, the governing coalition broke up due to long internal disagreements caused by some scandals over party funding and deteriorating economic data.
In January 1998 a transitional government was formed under Josef Tošovský . Their job was to lead the country until the next election.
Electoral system
The House of Representatives was elected using proportional representation. There was a 5% threshold . The legislative period was 4 years.
Election result
The Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) emerged as the strongest force, increasing by 5.87 to a total of 32.31 percentage points and thus receiving the most seats. The conservative Democratic Citizens' Party (ODS), previously the strongest force, lost slightly and became only the second largest party. However, this was not counted as a defeat, as the party had split as a result of the previous government crisis and the fact that Václav Klaus remained on the position of party chairman and surveys had meanwhile rated it significantly worse: The Freedom Union (US), newly founded by the internal party opponents Klaus , pulled with 8.60% in the House of Representatives. The Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM) and the Christian Democratic Union (KDU-ČSL) made slight gains.
