Gains and losses
A parliamentary election was held in Algeria on May 10, 2012 . The election for the National People's Assembly took place in the wake of the Arab Spring , which had largely ended in Algeria , although since the suppression of the unrest from 2010 a free election like in Morocco or Tunisia was not expected.
For the first time, the opposition Front of Socialist Forces decided not to boycott the elections. The Islamist parties threatened "consequences" if they were not declared the election winner.
observer
The Algerian government said it would allow foreign election observers. The observers would include the Carter Center , the National Democratic Institute, and other non-governmental organizations from the European Union and the Arab League .
