The Partheneion (from Greek  παρθένειον partheneion "virgin song ", to παρθένος parthenos "virgin") is a form of the ancient choir song . It was sung as a half religious, half secular hymn by a girls' choir and was particularly popular in Sparta ; to it it was of instrumental play such. B. with the kithara , and dance accompanied and was less solemn than other genres such. B. the Paian .

Only a few fragments have survived, such as the conclusion of a Partheneion from Alkman , which was probably a processional song for the goddess Artemis , and fragments from Pindar's no longer preserved Partheneia and its appendix; they contain verses about immortality, about Daphne and Pan in choriambischem measure . Parthenia of Bakchylides and Semonides are mentioned in other works, but have also not survived.

In a tomb in Saqqara, Egypt, a papyrus of such a virgin song with 101 verses was found in 1855 , which is now in the collections of the Louvre . It was not until 105 years later that fragments of comparable papyri from the ancient Egyptian Oxyrhynchos were discovered in the collection of the British Museum .
