This was followed by postgraduate stays at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales , Paris , and the University College London . In 1968 he was a research assistant at the Lexicon of the Early Greek Epic in Hamburg , and from 1970 to 1974 lecturer in Greek at the University of Urbino in Italy. From 1975 to 1984 he taught ancient languages at the Collège de Béthusy in Lausanne. From 1976 to 1981 he was President of the Association Suisse de Sémiotique . In 1977 he received his doctorate from the University of Lausanne with a thesis on the early Greek poet Alkman and his girls' choirs as Docteur ès Lettres. In winter 1981/82 he led as part of anthropological research fieldwork in the region of the Sepik in Papua New Guinea through.

From 1984 to 2003 he was professor of Greek language and literature at the University of Lausanne, but also held various visiting professorships and research stays abroad ( Harvard 1992, Lille 1993/1994, Yale 1998). In 1997 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1994 to 1997 he was President of the Département Interfacultaire d'Histoire et de Sciences des Religions at the University of Lausanne and was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Observatoire des religions en Suisse when it was founded in 1999 .

In the winter of 1991/92 he was invited as Directeur d'études to the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Section des Sciences Religieuses) in Paris, reappointed in the winter of 1998/99 and in 2001 a permanent employee. He has now retired.

Calame is involved in social and political issues beyond specialist boundaries in published statements (criticism of neoliberalism and Swiss asylum policy ) and in public debates, especially within the framework of the globalization - critical non-governmental organization ATTAC .

Research priorities

The focus of Calame's work is the semiotic , anthropological and pragmatic investigation of society and mythology of ancient Greece . In contrast to the structuralism of Claude Lévi-Strauss , Calame attaches great importance to the respective contexts of the énonciation ("utterance") of myth narratives, the respective seat in life , which he elicits with philological accuracy. Calame regularly pays great attention to the differentiation of his methodology. His interpretation of the educational and initiatory function of the Partheneia (girls' choirs) by the Spartan lyric poet Alkman from the 7th century BC. In this regard, BC represented a paradigm shift in the interpretation of early Greek poetry . Calame recognized elements of archaic tribal initiatives in the rites de passage . Further works on the Athenian national hero Theseus and the Greek city of Cyrene in North Africa are dedicated to the pragmatic connection between myth and historical cult . As for Theseus, he was able to show that in Athens in the 6th and 5th centuries traditional archaic mythical material was reinterpreted in a ritual and institutional context into a national mythology of the hero. Using further examples, Calame developed a pragmatic and anthropological poetics of ancient Greek myths in this sense . In his study on the eros of the Greeks, Calame works on a physiology of love , the function of eros in poetry and pictorial representation, the institutions which he supports, the space in which he exercises his power, and its initiatory function with the philosophers and the Orphics out. Most recently, he devoted extensive work to the interrelated categories of space and time in early Greek poetry ( Hesiod , Bakchylides ), the establishment of space and time in the founding of the colony of Cyrene, and the temporal alignment of language in the Orphic gold leaf from Hipponion .
