Merlo is a partido in the province of Buenos Aires in eastern Argentina , which belongs to the Gran Buenos Aires metropolitan area . The Partido belongs to the Zona Oeste . The capital is the city of the same name, Merlo .
history
The region of today's Partido was settled shortly after the second and permanent establishment of Buenos Aires. In 1730 Francisco de Merlo founded a parish near his estancia . In the same year Merlo founded the village of Villa de San Antonio del Camino , which was later renamed Merlo in his honor. For many years, Merlo lagged behind the development of the nearby town of Morón . In 1865 the region was officially declared a partido. The city of Merlo used to be a railway junction and an economic center for the agricultural area. More than half of the Partido is now in the greater Buenos Aires area, but the population density is lower than in other Partidos.
Population and geography
Today the Partido has 469,985 inhabitants on an area of 170 km². This corresponds to a population density of 2,764.6 inhabitants / km².
The Partido borders on Morón and Ituzaingó (in the northeast), La Matanza (in the southeast), Marcos Paz (in the southwest), Moreno (in the northwest) and the Río de la Reconquista (in the northwest). Other important places of the Partido are in addition to the city of Merlo San Antonio de Padua , Parque San Martín , Libertad , Pontevedra and Mariano Acosta . politics
The Partido is administered by a kind of district administration, which is divided into executive (the mayor or in Spanish Intendente ) and legislative (the city council or in Spanish Consejo Deliberante ).
The mayor is elected for a four-year term. Raúl Alfredo Othacehe, a lawyer and Peronist , has been the incumbent since 1991 . The city council consists of 24 members, the majority often being the Peronist Party. The mayor and city councilors can be re-elected as often as they like.
