The Partido Trabalhista Timorense PT (Workers' Party) or Trabalhista for short ( in other sources also Partido Trabalhista Timorense PTT ) is one of the five parties in East Timor that were founded in 1974. The party describes itself as democratic and socialist, comparable to the Australian Labor Party ALP .

history

The founders of the party on September 5, 1974, were the late Paulo Freitas da Silva Albano , Domingos da Conceição Pereira and Alpido Abrão Martins . The party advocated independence from the then colonial power Portugal , but advocated a gradual detachment with further ties to Portugal. She saw herself as a representative of the workers and an alternative to the allegedly communist FRETILIN . When the party was founded, it consisted of only ten members. They ignored social realities and had no idea what constitutes a party. Accordingly, it remained small and insignificant. The colonial administration even refused to be recognized as a party.

Freitas da Silva wrote to the then Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam asking for troops to secure peace in the country. The request was rejected. Domingos da Conceição Pereira officially signed the Balibo Declaration for the Trabalhista , in which all East Timorese parties except FRETILIN are said to have called for the Indonesians to march into East Timor. The declaration, a draft of the Indonesian secret service, was signed in Bali and not in Balibo, probably under pressure from the Indonesian government. The signatories were more or less prisoners of Indonesia.

On March 31, 1986, the Trabalhista and the other East Timorese parties founded the National Timorese Convergence ( Convergencia Nacional Timorense CNT ) as the umbrella organization for the Timorese resistance against the Indonesian occupation. This association soon broke up again, so that in 1988 a new attempt was made with the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Mauche CNRM , which in 1998 was finally renamed the Conselho Nacional de Resistência Timorense CNRT . Like the other members of the CNRT, Trabalhista rejected Indonesia's offer of autonomy and called for a referendum. Trabalhista sees the referendum in August 1999 as a line under the past and a new beginning. Already under the administration of UNTAET , Trabalhista criticized the dictatorial tendencies and lack of transparency of the leading politicians of the CNRT, Xanana Gusmão and José Ramos-Horta . Trabalhista even demonstrated, although a member, against the leadership of the CNRT and later against the establishment of the second interim cabinet.

In the parliamentary elections on August 30, 2001 , the party received 0.56% of the vote and thus none of the 88 seats in Parliament of East Timor . In the 2007 elections , the Trabalhista did not run with its own list.

In the 2012 parliamentary elections , Trabalhista and the Klibur Oan Timor Asuwain (KOTA) formed a joint electoral list under the name Aliança Democrática . But it failed with only 2,622 votes (0.56%) at the three percent hurdle. The best result achieved the Aliança Democrática in the then Ainaro district with 0.92% of the votes.

Members

In 2001 Trabalhista had about 2500 members with associations in all 13 of the former East Timor districts. About 45% of the members are women, as are half of the board members. There are three secretaries and three treasurers under the chairman and his deputy.

Paulo Freitas da Silva was originally the party chairman and one of the founders of the Trabalhista. During the Indonesian occupation he sat for five years as a member of the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI) in the Indonesian parliament of Timor Timur and was chairman of the East Timorese Association of SBSI , the Indonesian workers' union. In the permanent council of the CNRT, Freitas da Silva was the representative of the Trabalhista.

Maria Angela Freitas took over the party chairmanship from her late father Paulo Freitas da Silva in 2007 (status: end of 2011). She was previously Vice President and member of the National Council. She withdrew her candidacy for the 2007 presidential elections because of the “poor and unstable situation” that would not allow for correct elections. On January 11, 2012, Angela Freitas announced her candidacy for the 2012 presidential election in East Timor . However, it was not allowed due to a lack of supporter signatures. In 2017 she announced her renewed candidacy.

Dr. Nélson Martins was Secretary General of the Trabalhista from March 2000 to July 2007. The doctor received his training in Bandung / Indonesia and Australia. Between 1995 and 1998 he worked against child labor in Indonesia. From August 2007 to 2012, Martins was Minister of Health in the government of Xanana Gusmão .

politics

The party advocates a democratic socialization of industry, the markets, the production of goods and the distribution of property, as far as this is necessary in order to end exploitation and other anti-social issues. All members of society should participate in political and economic power and control the institutions of the state. Job creation and the interests of the trade unions are among the main points of Trabalhista. In 2001 the party planned to join the Socialist International . The education system and the health care system should be freely accessible to everyone. Traditions should be protected. In 2001, Trabalhista required Tetum and English as the official languages . Human rights, and especially women's rights, are a focus of the party as the basis for tolerance and a multicultural society. Child labor should be combated.
