Passenger is a Swedish alternative metal - band from Gothenburg , in 1995 under the name Cliff was founded.

history

The Passenger project has existed since 1995/1996 and was founded by the drummer Patrik J. Sten and the guitarist Niclas Engelin under the name Cliff. The reason for the formation was for the two to play music that did not correspond to their previous bands. The two went to Studio Fredman , where they recorded two songs that were never released. Engelin then worked with Gardenian while Sten worked at Transport League , which put the project on hold. In 1997 Engelin joined In Flames as a tour guitarist . Engelin was able to get the in-flames singer Anders Fridén excited about Passenger, whereupon the project work was resumed. With Sten, who also came back, and the bassist Håkan Skoger ( headplate ) the line-up was completed. The band was then seriously pursued since 2000. A first demo was recorded in the summer of the same year, followed by a second in spring 2001. In the summer and autumn the band went to Anders Fridén's Phlat Planet Studio , which was located in the same building as Studio Fredman, so that the recorded material was mixed there. The band was able to do this mainly because Sten worked there as a sound engineer. In 2003 the self-titled debut album was released by Century Media . Up to this point the band had not held any concerts. That changed in December of the same year when performances in Europe followed along with Moonspell , Lacuna Coil and Poisonblack . In March 2004 the band went into the studio to record a new album before it was mixed in April 2004 at the Fredman studio. However, the album was not released. Instead, the members devoted themselves to their other or completely new bands. In March 2005 Niclas Engelin founded the band Engel . In an interview with Mike S. from metalunderground.com in 2012, Engelin stated that 14 or 15 songs were recorded during the recording, but that they were discarded because the members found them unsuitable. According to Engelin, the future of the band is uncertain because he is too busy with his family and the work at Engel.

style

According to the band biography on centurymedia.com , the band has been influenced by groups like Handsome , Chum , Helmet (band) , Depeche Mode and The Posies . Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer assigned the band to alternative metal in his review of the debut album. Even if the musicians describe the songs as "[ hard ] grooves with a bit of pop ", the songs are still crude and the samples used are aggressive. Compared to earlier recordings by Fridén, the singing is clearer and more melodic. Songs like In Reverse , For You and Circus move between alternative and industrial metal . According to Rock Hard's Patrick Schmidt , the band plays a mix of modern rock and metal and described the music as a mix of Transport League, Disturbed and the quieter passages of the previously released In-Flames album. David Perri wrote in The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 4: The '00s in his review of the debut album that Passenger is a more radio-friendly version of In Flames. Anders Fridén is in the same situation as Corey Taylor in Stone Sour , who usually sings with Slipknot . The clearer singing makes the English , which is not perfect both lyrically and phonetically, more clearly.
