Patricia Anne McKillip (* 29. February 1948 in Salem , Oregon , USA ) is an American fantasy - and science fiction - writer .

Life

McKillip is the daughter of Wayne T. McKillip and Helen, nee Roth. Her mother and older sister Carol, to whom she also dedicated the first part of the Earth Magic Trilogy, still live in Coquille , a small town near the Oregon coast . McKillip spent part of her childhood in England and Germany, as her father, an Air Force officer, was stationed there between 1958 and 1962.

She studied English at San José State University , where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1971 and graduated with a master's degree in 1973 . After completing her studies, she became a freelance writer. Her first works House of Parchment Street (1973) and The Throme of Erril of Sherril (1973) were still aimed at young people, she was recognized as a fantasy writer for adults when the novel The Forgotten Beasts of Eld (German The Forgotten Beasts of Eld ) was awarded the World Fantasy Award in 1975 .

In 1982 she published Stepping from the Shadows , a strongly autobiographical novel about a young fantasy writer-to-be.

She currently lives with her husband, David Lunde, a poet, in Roxbury , a small town in the Catskill Mountains , New York State .
