from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Patrick Kelly (born April 16, 1779 in Kilkenny , Ireland ; † October 8, 1829 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Waterford and Lismore .

Life

Patrick Kelly received on 18 July 1802, the sacrament of Holy Orders . Prior to his appointment as bishop, he directed St. John's Seminary in Birchfield, near Kilkenny.

On July 11, 1820, Pope Pius VII appointed him first bishop of the Diocese of Richmond in the United States, which was established on the same date . He was ordained episcopal on August 24th of the same year by the Archbishop of Dublin , John Thomas Troy OP . Co- consecrators were the Coadjutor Archbishop of Dublin, Daniel Murray , and the Bishop of Ossory , Kyran Marum , in St. James Chapel in Dublin. Before leaving, he was a co-consecrator at the episcopal ordination of the Bishop of Charleston , John England .

In January 1821 he reached the territory of his diocese in Norfolk , which he took possession of on January 19th. However, the Catholic community in Norfolk was deeply divided due to land disputes and the establishment of a diocese. In addition, she was too poor to finance the establishment of a diocese, so Kelly had to earn his living by running a school himself. He therefore asked permission to return to Ireland.

On February 22, 1822, Pope Pius VII appointed him Bishop of Waterford and Lismore . He left Virginia in July 1822 without ever having reached his episcopal seat of Richmond. For the next 19 years there was no successor in the Richmond Diocese, administered by the Archbishops of Baltimore as Apostolic Administrators .
