In 1848 Paul Chenavard was formally commissioned by the Interior Minister of the Provisional Government, Alexandre Ledru-Rollin , to carry out the interior decoration of the Pantheon in Paris . In 1851 the order was canceled when Napoleon III. handed the building over to the Catholic Church. It stayed u. a. the design of the mosaic “Philosophy of History”.

He then created a series of philosophical and religious images. Strangely enough, he also painted dozens of erotic watercolors . The 4 by 5 meter painting “Divina Tragoedia ou la fin des religions” (The Divine Tragedy or the End of Religions), exhibited in the Salon of 1869, attracted severe criticism. Since then, the artist has not participated in the exhibitions. During the Paris Commune of 1870, Chenavard joined a battalion in the National Guard at the age of 63.
