Paul Oscar Huldschinsky (born August 18, 1889 in Berlin , † February 1, 1947 in Santa Monica ) was a German interior designer and illustrator .

Life

Paul Huldschinsky was the son of the industrialist and art collector Oscar Huldschinsky . He first worked in Munich and during this time mainly created book illustrations. He later moved to Berlin and started working as an interior designer.

He furnished offices in Unter den Linden as well as "numerous villas and spacious apartments in the affluent south-west" of Berlin, such as the villa of Baroness Goldschmidt-Rothschild on Schwanenwerder , Inselstrasse 7. In November 1938 he was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp . After his release he emigrated to the USA in December 1938, where he continued to work as an interior designer. He designed z. B. Thomas Mann's villa in Pacific Palisades , the contact is also documented by entries in Mann's diary. Huldschinsky also worked as a set designer for the film industry. He died in 1947 after a serious illness, leaving behind his wife Marie Ann and several stepchildren. "... after Huldschinsky's death all traces are lost."

Letters from Huldschinsky are in Erika Landsberg's estate , the holdings were handed over to the German National Library (DNB) by the Ratinger city ​​archive . A drawing by Huldschinsky's hand for the 60th birthday of the publisher, art collector and councilor Alexander Koch from 1920 entered the art market in 2010.

Awards

At the Academy Awards in 1945 , Huldschinsky received an Oscar together with Cedric Gibbons , William Ferrari and Edwin B. Willis for the set of the film The House of Lady Alquist . Other films he was involved in include Desire Me and Meet Me in St. Louis .
