Paul Mania

Paul Mania (* 1883 ; † August 1, 1935 ) was a German organist , pianist , composer and orchestra conductor .

Live and act

Paul Mania was born in 1883 in Czepolowicz, Lower Silesia, in the Brieg district, the son of a farmer. Despite his musical talent, which was recognizable at an early stage, he first had to complete an unpopular business apprenticeship before he could become a successful musician thanks to secret music studies at the Conservatory in Wroclaw and the support of the owner of the Ibach music store in Cologne.

composer

Mania's main creative period as a composer fell between 1910 and 1920. He became known for his setting of Rhenish poems, which were soon widespread because of their popularity. His famous song Im Rolandsbogen , for which the local poet Jörg Ritzel wrote the words, was performed for the first time in 1914. It was spread on numerous song postcards .

Popular songs such as Zu Rüdesheim in der Drosselgass' or the setting of the poem Rheintreue by Josef Schlegel as a choral setting are also among Mania's works, as well as the Brohlallied , the poetic model of which came from Johann Jacobs and which not only applies to the inhabitants of the Brohl valley to this day very popular.

However, Mania not only wrote Rhine and Weinlieder, but also set literary texts by Otto Julius Bierbaum , Wilhelm Busch , Ludwig Fulda , Hermann Löns and Heinz Steguweit to music . He also composed the march of the Cologne Prinzengarde, which is still officially played as the Prinzen-Gardemarsch at Cologne Carnival .

Performing musician

Due to his poor health, he did not have to enter during the First World War, but found the opportunity to organize over 400 concerts for charitable purposes.

Mania worked as both an organist and a pianist. B. accompanied well-known singing soloists in Gürzenich , as well as orchestral conductor, but especially as choir director of regional associations, e.g. As the Cologne Men's Choir, the Cologne mania women's choir, the Solingen male choir, but especially the 1842 founded the Cologne male choir .

In addition, he used to play the organ and the harmonium as a soloist , which he particularly valued as an instrument.

In addition to the serious music, it was also the cheerful songs from his new home in the Rhineland, whose performance he accompanied as orchestra leader by well-known carnivalists such as Willi Ostermann or Gerhard Ebeler .

Artist for the media from 1924

When radio came up in Germany, it was WERAG (the forerunner of Westdeutscher Rundfunk ) that hired him in 1924 as choir director, soloist accompanist, composer and deputy conductor.

Mania owed his commitment to the Lindström Group in Berlin to his reputation as master on the harmonium, for whose Parlophon brand he recorded numerous gramophone records from 1924. Here he appeared both as a soloist and as a companion of important singers on the stage and concert hall, including singers from the synagogue such as Cologne's chief cantor Hermann Fleischmann , the last cantor of Hanover, Israel Alter , or the Russian cantor Morris Katzin .

In 1934 Mania became seriously ill and had to be taken to hospital. On August 1, 1935, at the age of 52, he died in his Silesian homeland in the spa town of Obernigk (Oborniki Śląskie in the Katzengebirge).
