Professional background

After completing his school education, Metzger worked as an industrial clerk at Neff and then at the post office. In 1964 he began training for the senior administrative service at the Bruchsal city administration and, after completing his training, continued to work in the municipal building department until 1974. After that, Metzger was a speaker at the Baden-Württemberg Municipal Council until 1986 , where he was promoted to the higher administrative service . There, Metzger was entrusted, among other things, with representing municipal interests in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg .

After he had been an honorary mayor of his hometown, the Bruchsal district of Heidelsheim, as an SPD member from 1975 , Metzger ran for the post of mayor of the neighboring large district town of Bretten in 1985 as a non-party member . In the election in November 1985, Metzger was able to unite the majority of the votes and begin his work on February 1, 1986. The subsequent elections in 1993 and 2001 confirmed Metzger (now a CDU member) in his office with a large majority. During his time as Lord Mayor, Metzger made a name for himself, among other things, with the industrial settlement. Since he had exceeded the age limit for a new candidacy at the time of the mayoral election in 2009, he did not stand for re-election. Metzger's third term ended on January 31, 2010. Martin Wolff has been his successor since then .

voluntary work

Metzger is the spokesman for the citizens' initiative Brettener Heimat- und Denkmalpflege and is committed to the preservation of historical buildings, including the Pfeiferturm, which was renovated by the initiative.

On September 30, 2009, Metzger was elected president by the members of the Karlsruher SC as one of three candidates with 748 of 1424 votes. He became the successor to Hubert H. Raase , who was no longer running. At the following annual general meeting of the association on September 20, 2010, a motion to deselect Metzger was put to the vote; after the voting procedure was initiated with an absolute majority of the votes cast, Metzger was able to avoid voting and declared his resignation.
