Paul Neumann (born June 20, 1880 in Chemnitz ; † August 17, 1961 in Hamburg ) was a German politician, Hamburg parliamentarian , senator ( SPD ) and chairman of the Reich Association of War Victims and Civil Disabled, Social Pensioners and Survivors, today's Social Association Germany e. V.

Life

Neumann did an apprenticeship as a printer and worked as a typesetter before he became editor of the Lüneburger Volksblatt in 1909 . From 1912 he worked mainly for the Hamburger Echo . From 1914 to 1918 Neuman took part in the First World War and then returned to Hamburg. Neumann was elected Secretary of the Workers 'and Soldiers' Council for Greater Hamburg during the November Revolution in November 1918 , a position he held until 1925. In January 1919 he used his strong position to overthrow the "Red Dictator" Heinrich Laufenberg together with Karl Hense .

In the elections for Hamburg citizenship in 1921, Neumann won a mandate for the SPD; he belonged to the citizenry until 1933. On March 18, 1925, he was elected to the Hamburg Senate . There he was responsible for the welfare department. Together with the other SPD senators, he resigned on March 3, 1933.

After the Second World War Neumann became active again and was instrumental in the re-establishment of the "Reich Association of War Participants and War Disabled" on November 29, 1946 in Hamburg, this time under the name Reich Association of War and Civil Disabled, Social Pensioners and Survivors. V. , today's Social Association Germany e. V. involved. He became chairman of the Reichsbund. He played a major role in the introduction of the Federal Supply Act in 1950. He also published some local history writings.

Honors

  • In 1955 Neumann was awarded the Mayor Stolten Medal .
  • Since 1973, the Senate has awarded the Senator Neumann Prize every five years to honor institutions or people in Hamburg who successfully promote equal opportunities, social integration and self-determination for people with disabilities .
  • In Hamburg-Bergstedt , a residential complex for the disabled, the Senator-Neumann-Heim , is named after Neumann.
