Life

Paul Sakolowski attended the Wettiner Gymnasium in Dresden. After graduation (1890) he studied philosophy , classical archeology and history at the University of Leipzig , where he was particularly influenced by the Latinist Otto Ribbeck . In 1893 he was charged with a dissertation on the Anthologia Palatina Dr. phil. PhD .

Through Ribbeck's mediation, Sakolowski received a position at the University of Göttingen on July 1, 1894 . Here he was responsible for the preparatory work for the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae under the supervision of Friedrich Leo . As secretary of the Göttingen thesaurus office, he coordinated the material collection of the student assistants; he himself excerpted the poems of Gorippus and the writing De ave phoenice by Lactantius and revised the collections of the Carmina paganorum .

In addition to working for the thesaurus, Sakolowski participated in editorial companies. In Richard Wagner's collection of Mythographi Graeci , he published Parthenii libellus Peri erōtikōn pathēmatōn in 1896 .

During his work in the thesaurus office, Sakolowski turned increasingly to contemporary music and became a great fan of the composer Richard Wagner . He neglected his duties as a secretary more and more, so that he was released on June 30, 1899. His successor was Georg Dittmann , who had been involved in the business as a student assistant since 1894.

In the following years Sakolowski lived as a freelance writer in Leipzig. He earned his living mainly from his writing activities. He published travel guides and essays on music history and contemporary art. His most extensive work was a three-volume biography on Ludwig van Beethoven , which was published as a revision of Ludwig Nohl's biography .
