Paul Sutermeister

Paul Sutermeister (born June 6, 1864 in Küsnacht ; † February 2, 1905 in Bern ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor , writer and editor of the Berner Tagblatt .

Life

youth

Paul Sutermeister was a son of Otto Sutermeister . He attended grammar school in Bern and studied theology at the Universities of Basel and Göttingen . During his studies in Göttingen, he became a member of the Thuringia Academic Theological Association .

Pastor

Mathilde Fontannaz, Sutermeister's spouse

He began his sermon in Appenzellerland. In 1898 he published a biography of Meta Heusser-Schweizer , a work on Mission Romande and the pamphletic novel Der Dorfkaiser . «His folk pamphlet 'Der Dorfkaiser', in which he sharply scourged the lottery devil and the unscrupulous exploitation of the weak of the people by village magnates [...] cost him his job as pastor in Walzenhausen and thus led him to work in the daily press."

“After pulpit speeches and conversations were unsuccessful, Pastor Sutermeister wrote the publication 'Der Dorfkaiser', which was published in early 1898 by the well-known publishing house ' Guter Schriften' . Although it remained anonymous, the residents quickly identified their pastor as the author. It soon became clear that “Hubelwies” meant Walzenhausen and “Hinterforst” meant the Lachen district . And that half of Switzerland mockingly pointed to Walzenhausen, which had fallen into the reprehensible lottery game, was felt to be a great shame. "

“Members of the Rohner family, who are active in the embroidery industry, were suspected to be ' emperors' . In any case, Titus Rohner […] , who was elected by the Landsgemeinde to the government council in 1893, surprisingly decided not to be re- elected in 1899. »

Editor

As a result, Sutermeister moved from Appenzell to Bern. There he came to the Berner Tagblatt as a foreign editor , "edited its Saturday supplement 'Berner Heim' and took care of the coverage of concerts and associations." For some time he was in charge of "the editing of the weekly newspaper‚ ‹ Fürs Schweizerhaus › "and then the editing of" the Christian entertainment paper ‹ Fürs Heim ›, which appears in Basel . "

Sutermeister was married to Mathilde Fontannaz; In 1905 he died of pneumonia. In his obituary in the Bernese Confederation , he wrote about his writing activities: "As a writer, Sutermeister displayed an understanding and heartfelt view of our popular life, whose downsides he did not overlook." His son Paul Oswald (1902–1969) emigrated to Sylvan Lake (Alberta) , Canada.
