history

The Berner Zeitung was first published on January 3, 1979. The history of the newspaper, popularly known as "BZ", dates back to 1834, in 1835 it appeared for the first time as a weekly and from 1845 to 1894 as a daily with Jakob Stämpfli as the first editor and editor.

In the family tree, four main lines can be traced, which represent the origins of today's Berner Zeitung : the Berner Tagblatt (1888), which was taken over by the Berner Landeszeitung in 1922 (formerly the intelligence paper for the city of Bern , founded in 1834), the Emmenthaler Nachrichten (1883, from 1914 Emmentaler Nachrichten , from 1959 Bernische Tages-Nachrichten , from 1963 only daily news ), the Dorfblatt von Langnau (1844, from 1855 Emmenthaler Blatt ) and the Neue Berner Zeitung (1919). The Berner Zeitung was created in 1973 from the merger of the Emmenthaler Blatt and the Neue Berner Zeitung . In 1977 this merged with the Tages-Nachrichten to form the Berner Nachrichten . Today's Berner Zeitung was created in 1979 from the merger of the Berner Nachrichten and the Berner Tagblatt .

The first editor-in-chief was Peter Schindler , who headed the editorial team from 1979 to 1982. He was followed by Urs P. Gasche (1982–1985), Ronald Roggen (1985–1986), Beat Hurni (1987–1996) and Andreas Z'Graggen (1996–2005). Between 2006 and 2009, Markus Eisenhut and Michael Hug jointly managed the editorial team. After moving from Eisenhut to the Tages-Anzeiger , Michael Hug was the sole editor-in-chief. At the end of 2013 he handed over the editor-in-chief to Peter Jost .

At the beginning of 2001, the Thuner Tagblatt and the Berner Oberländer became the headers of the Berner Zeitung . In the autumn of the same year, another regional edition, the Solothurner Tagblatt , was launched; it was discontinued in 2009 for economic reasons. Since 2001 the Berner Zeitung has been providing the national pages to the Freiburger Nachrichten in a cooperation. There is also a collaboration with the Bieler Tagblatt for supraregional reporting. From 2014 until the creation of the Tamedia editorial team in 2018, the Berner Zeitung also delivered the national pages to the “Zürcher Regionalzeitungen”.

In December 2011, Espace Media announced that it wanted to merge the Oberaargau split edition and the Langenthaler Tagblatt , which it had taken over from AZ Medien AG . The first edition of the BZ Langenthaler Tagblatt was published on July 2, 2012.

Since the beginning of 2018, only one German and one French-speaking Tamedia editorial team has been creating the international / national cover (domestic, international, business and sports) for the twelve paid daily and two Sunday newspapers of Tamedia. The previous editor-in-chief of the Tages-Anzeiger / SonntagsZeitung Arthur Rutishauser is the head of the German-speaking main editorial team , and he also remains the editor-in-chief of the SonntagsZeitung . The deputy editor-in-chief of the German-language editorial team Tamedia is the previous deputy editor-in-chief of the Berner Zeitung , Adrian Zurbriggen. Peter Jost initially remained editor-in-chief of the Berner Zeitung , at the beginning of 2019 he was replaced by Simon Bärtschi .
