Paul Belville Taylor, Jr. (born July 29, 1930 in Wilkinsburg , Pennsylvania - † August 29, 2018 in New York City ) was an American choreographer .

Life

Taylor was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in and around Washington, DC . In the late 1940s he graduated from Syracuse University , where he graduated with a degree in dance under director Martha Hill in 1953 . In 1954 he joined a small group of dancers and from 1955 he worked as a dancer at the Martha Graham Dance Company .

In addition to his work as a dancer, he began working as a choreographer in his own company, the Paul Taylor Dance Company, founded in 1954 . In 1959 he was invited as a guest dancer by Balanchine at the New York City Ballet . His first work as a choreographer was comparable to the work at the Judson Dance Theater . He made his breakthrough as a choreographer in 1962 with his work Aureole . His best known work is Esplanade from 1975, but other high quality and controversial works also stand out. These include works such as Big Bertha (1970), Cloven Kingdom (1976), Airs (1978), Arden Court (1981), Sunset (1983), Last Look (1985), Speaking in Tongues (1988), Brandenburgs ( 1988), Company B (1991), Piazzolla Caldera (1996), Black Tuesday (2001), Promethean Fire (2002) and Beloved Renegade (2008).

In his career he has worked with well-known artists such as Robert Rauschenberg , Jasper Johns , Ellsworth Kelly , Alex Katz , Tharon Musser , Thomas Skelton , Gene Moore , John Rawlings , William Ivey Long , Jennifer Tipton , Santo Loquasto , James F. Ingalls , Donald York or Matthew Diamond worked together.

In 1974 Taylor had a breakdown on stage as a dancer and then only worked as a choreographer. Taylor had lived with his significant other, George, since the 1950s.
